The sunshine is here in Kearney!

One of the easiest ways to get our little ones to burn some energy and soak up that vitamin D is to take them to a park. Here in Kearney, we have some amazing options available to us.

Yanney Park

Yanney Park is 80 acres of memories. There’s a playground for your kiddos to enjoy, and walking trails just in case that jungle gym wasn’t quite enough to burn all of your child’s energy. This park is the perfect place for a family picnic. Bring that quilt, lay it out in the grass, and settle down for an amazing memory-making afternoon.

Harmon Park Splash Pad

On those hot summer days, we don’t want to be running back and forth after our little ones on a playground. Sure, Harmon Park has a playground for that very purpose, but it has something even more fun—a splash pad. So, pack those swimsuits and sunscreen, and let your little ones burn all of their energy in the splash pad. You might even want to join them!

Cottonmill Park

Cottonmill Park is an absolutely gorgeous area to spend time this summer. It is a popular spot to go fishing, but if you aren’t interested in bringing the gear with you, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy. Take some time to feed ducks by the lake. Think about it, the toddlers will have the time of their lives! Once you’re done, take them on a nice walk on one of the many trails that snakes its way around the park.

Let’s face it, sometimes being outside is the last thing we want to do when it’s hot. There are some perfect places in town that will keep you in air-conditioned comfort, all while keeping those little ones occupied.

There’s nothing quite like a good children’s museum, and Kearney Area Children’s Museum is no exception. They are equipped with interactive exhibits that are continually changing, and they even have play spaces designed specifically for toddlers. Want something different? A great way to get the family out of the house, yet still enjoy the air conditioning, is to go see a movie. The World Theatre Matinees has you covered. Their screens are supplied with family-friendly movies. So what are you waiting for? Grab your kiddos and head to your charming local theater! Don’t forget the popcorn!

While looking for educational activities this summer, don’t forget to check out your very own local library. If you’re getting tired of reading the same story every night before bed, it’s time to see what else you can find. Try picking a theme every week. Perhaps you’ll look for dinosaur books one week, then branch out into the magical world of narwhals the next. No matter what you choose, you’re bound to find some amazing stories!

Keep an eye out for local events all around town. You can find these in Facebook groups, or sometimes by checking the events page of the public library. You can even check at places such as Home Depot for their monthly craft events!

Sometimes, you just don’t want to leave the house. We get it! When those days strike, it’s best to have a plan in place.

DIY Water Play

When all else fails, it’s time to break out that hose and let the kiddos have fun. You can hook up that trusty sprinkler and send your kids after the glorious water, or use one of those little inflatable pools. No matter what your water activity looks like in your own yard, you’re bound to have a blast!

Sidewalk Fun

Sidewalk chalk is a tried-and-true activity for children of all ages. Make a hopscotch path down the sidewalk, and teach your children how to play! (Then watch your doorbell camera. You might have random people stopping to try it out!) Don’t be afraid to get creative with sidewalk chalk. You can draw bubbles for the kids to jump in, and even swirls for them to twirl as fast as they can!

On those days when you really need to tire those little ones out, don’t underestimate the power of a walk. Make a scavenger list for your little ones. This can be as simple as one purple flower, one stick, and one red leaf. No matter what you choose, your little one will be engaged the entire time!
