Kearney’s Hidden Gems: 5 Unique Spring Activities for Kids

Great spring activities in Kearney.

Time to Explore

With the weather warming up, it’s time to escape the confines of the house and soak up some sun! Get those kids outside, burn some energy, and give yourself that much-needed reset with some spring activities. When you live in a place for a while, it can be hard to find ways to get out. Everything feels boring, as though you’ve done it a million times before. Don’t be afraid to explore like a tourist in your own town, peek past those well-known attractions and see what’s there!

Not only does spending time outdoors get the kids away from screens, but it’s great for their physical, mental, and emotional health. Studies show that outdoor play promotes more engaged learning. So roll up those sleeves and let that vitamin D in.

1. Adventure at Cottonmill Park

This park has many different things to do. Pack a picnic and go on a peaceful hike across the miles of trails, or simply let the little ones loose on the playground. Bring a fishing pole and see what you and your kids can catch, or even try your hand at disc golf! If the weather isn’t cooperating, peek into the Rotary Nature Barn and see what’s going on. This park is sure to create memories for each member of the family. Want to tackle a larger distance? Cottonmill Park is the trailhead for a 13.1-mile paved hiking and biking trail that spans all the way to Fort Kearny.

When summer rolls around, be sure to look into their day camp! It’s a great program that regularly hosts more than 400 children!

2. Educational Fun at Kearney Public Library

When it comes to planning your springtime adventures, never underestimate your local library! You might be surprised to see what they have on their events page. The local Kearney Public Library, for example, has reading challenges going all year round, knitting classes, story time for even the littlest children, and movies! The schedule is constantly changing, so be sure to hop on regularly to see what’s coming up!

Of course, you can always run by the library to pick up your little one’s next bedtime story, or your next reading escape. They even have a selection of educational games for family game night!

3. Historic discovery at the Archway.

Do you have a little historian in your family? Or perhaps you are intrigued with history yourself? If so, the Archway is just for you. They have a replica of a sod house, a beautiful biking trail, and an interactive historical exhibit. They have historical events planned for the entire year, so be sure to check back and see what’s coming up! The Archway even has springtime camps just for the kids!

4. Explore nature at Yanney Heritage Park’s Environmental Learning Center.

Spanning 80 acres on the southern side of Kearney, this donor-run park is a great place to escape into nature. Swan paddle boats, an 80-foot tower, and gorgeous flower gardens are only a few of the things this park has to offer. Bring those fishing poles and see what you can catch, or go on a peaceful stroll down one of the many trails. Once the weather is toasty, get those kiddos into one of the splash pads (opening in May) and let them burn some energy!

5. Artistic Expression at Kearney Area Children’s Museum

This interactive children’s museum hosts over 20 exhibits. Whether your child wants to become a train conductor, an artist, or a scientist, there is an exhibit just for them! The exhibits change with the seasons, so there is always something new to explore. The museum even has a children’s camp that is sure to make lifelong memories. And for those nights when you just need a break, they offer a kid’s night out! Let your children learn how they learn the best—by play!

There’s always something new to explore.

Even if you’ve lived in the area for a while, there is always something new to explore in the Kearney area. Go check out the library, science museum, or just go sit in the sun at the park.
